  • What is the process for calibration and returns? How long does it take?
  • How much does operator training cost, and is it hands-on or just a manual?

When you start asking these questions, you'll notice something: the vendors who are transparent about the answers are usually the ones you can trust. The ones who hedge, who say 'we'll figure that out later,' who quote a low price and then add line items—those are the ones that cost you in the long run.

The Honest Truth

I learned this the hard way. My initial approach to procurement was completely wrong. I thought getting the lowest price was my job. But my real job was getting the equipment that worked, that my team could use, that didn't break down or need recalibration every month.

Now, I don't just look at price. I look at the vendor. Their reputation. Their support. Their willingness to be upfront about costs.

For our next order of hexagon cmms and that ultrasonic flow sensor we need for the new line—I'm going with the vendor who showed me a one-page breakdown of every cost, including the ones they hoped I wouldn't ask about. That quote was higher on the first line. But I bet you it's lower in the end.
